AI

Nastaran's background is in physical and digital fashion working across creative direction, fashion design, costume design and collaborating with both emerging and established brands. Nastaran is the co-founder and Creative Director of ORBYLINE a design platform creating digital fashion for the Metaverse with the purpose of re-defining a more sustainable and innovative future for fashion. We spoke to Nastaran about AI and fashion.

Who are your creative inspirations?

There are many actually, but the main ones that have been inspiring me for years are from Olafur Eliasson and Nick knight. I think both hold very strong and forward thinking perceptions and values that always makes me think in more depth. More closely to fashion design, Demna Gvasalia, Daniel lee, Gareth Pugh and Thierry Mugler.

How do you make digital fashion beautiful?

Well to answer this question I have to start by mentioning that the definition of “beauty” is subjective, so we can’t merely categorize any kind of fashion for being beautiful or not beautiful. The most powerful feature of fashion is actually its direct connection to culture, and culture determines what we consider as beauty. Having a background in traditional fashion, I personally gathered a database of fashion culture in my brain, and that’s the main guide for me to bring to digital fashion as well. Considering the fact that also the digital revolution comes with a culture, its interesting to merge them and create a new structure in terms of design. I personally start with the storytelling process that I always use for traditional fashion, and then bring the features to digital fashion to create pieces/atmospheres that are relevant. So in other words, using what harmony, storytelling and clothing means to me, and developing them in the digital realm. After all I think the knowledge and the features behind the traditional fashion, bring very strong roots to digital/virtual fashion.

Can you describe how you use AI in your work?

As mentioned above, I start by the storytelling, then visualize the moodboard with words and photos. this creates a base that makes my Ai results the most relevant to my personal way of designing. After that I continue with blending and prompting, freely letting AI assist me in ways that i never thought was possible before. Eventually it acts as a virtual assistant, it helps me bring my ideas to life, and makes good suggestions as well!

How does technology enhance your creativity?

Aside from the fact that technology facilitates the traditional way of work and helps with faster results, it also opens a portal to new possibilities. With the technology available at the moment for design, I am personally shocked how many of my creative blocks can be unblocked using technology. No matter in what step its being used, it has the ability to take the smallest hint and help me create the most relevant project I am aiming for. With the technology developing now faster than ever, I think there is a chance of a whole new design processes for all design industries, helping us to think smarter and create more efficiently.

What are you currently working on?

Aside from the projects im developing, we have recently founded the platform ORBYLINE with my partner Sogand Nobahar, in which we are developing a structure for fashion design through all ways technology contribute to fashion. From digital 3D assets to Ai collection development and physical solutions that can link the digital identity to the physical one through tech pieces. The purpose is to offer the full experience and blend our virtual and physical identities through fashion and technology. Its a very long process, but we are very excited about the path.
