3D + Photography

Nastplas is an international artist duo based in Madrid, Spain, formed in 2006 by illustrator Fran R. Learte 'drFranken' and creative director Natalia Molinos 'Na' (together 'Equipo Nastplas'). Their work combines an impressive range of digital elements and abstract patterns with which they develop elaborate art pieces with a deep aesthetic inspired by the laws of nature, forms found in science, engineering, architecture, thought, inquiry and scientific research. We spoke to them about their practice and creative inspirations.

In three words can your describe your 3D style?

Experimentation, Research, Imaginative.

What are the fundamental inspirations that inform your practice?

The fundamental inspirations and ideas that inform our practice at NastPlas are rooted in a rich tapestry of sources. We draw inspiration from the intricate beauty of the natural world, the precision and elegance of scientific principles, the structural integrity found in engineering and architecture, and the depth of philosophical thought and inquiry. Our work is a fusion of these diverse influences, resulting in elaborate art pieces that embody a deep aesthetic.

Additionally, our creative process is heavily influenced by a personal symbolism that permeates our work. We aim to reflect scenes and objects that resonate with both the human and natural realms. This reflection is a constant pursuit of answers beyond the visible, designed to captivate the imagination and evoke powerful emotions in the viewer.

Furthermore, our practice involves exploring the boundaries between reality and abstraction on multiple levels. We engage in a continuous process of research and artistic experimentation that takes us on a journey through various conceptual planes. This exploration serves as a foundational element in our work, allowing us to push the limits of artistic expression and challenge conventional perceptions of reality.

What excites you about working with digital technology?

Working with digital technology excites us for several compelling reasons. First and foremost, it allows us to simulate and explore a vast array of artistic techniques that would be otherwise inaccessible. The digital realm provides a limitless canvas where we can experiment with a multitude of tools, effects, and styles. This versatility empowers us to transcend traditional artistic boundaries and push the boundaries of our creativity.

Furthermore, as artists with a multidisciplinary approach, we engage in various mediums such as sculpture, craftsmanship, painting, and photography. Digital technology acts as a unifying platform that harmoniously integrates these diverse artistic forms. It enables us to seamlessly blend elements from different mediums, resulting in innovative and captivating compositions. This synergy between analog and digital mediums enriches our creative process and fosters a unique fusion of artistry.

Additionally, the digital realm offers us a dynamic and ever-evolving arena for artistic expression. It allows us to stay at the forefront of artistic innovation, experiment with emerging technologies, and adapt our work to reflect the rapidly changing world around us. This continuous evolution keeps our creative journey exciting and ensures that our art remains relevant and resonant with contemporary audiences.

What are you currently working on?

We have several ongoing projects, some of which are related to scientific research. However, our most significant project is to establish our own studio for the production of physical artwork, which we will be commencing very soon. This endeavor will involve a fusion of technology, cutting-edge approaches, and various artistic disciplines.
