Natalia's NFT debut was for Saatchi Art's Other Avatars, inspired by the work of Van Gogh and the NFT landscape, the project opened her mind to the world of digital creation. Moving seamlessly from oil on canvas and paper, she has become fascinated by the possibility of multiple dimensions that technology allows for. We spoke with Natalia about her approach to creating and influences.
For me, architecture has determined the dimensions of the spaces to be occupied, ensuring the survival of humanity through its expansion. I start by developing an imaginary scenery in all creations where the background is paramount to then move on to the creation of perspective. I pull physical strings understood as the idea of power and explore its constitution and the forms it acquires; The way it mimics and transforms and its relationship with movement, understood this as the relationship between space-time, implies occupation for its existence. Gravity threatens to extinguish the world that I am creating, but strings seem to hold together spaces preventing them from collapse. Strings reflect the invisible social structures to which we all want to belong and hang on to, evidencing our fear of solitude and exploring as well the new dimensions that are governed by different laws or even without them. Finally, I play with lights and shadows to which I dedicate most of my time.
Everything influences my practices - from the small details, the simplicity, and complexity of daily life to movies, books, and all forms of reality interpretation. I am obsessed with how everything is connected, that there is no isolated knowledge or event. That hunt for connections makes me feel completely aware about everything that happens in this world, it allows me to live intensely and to always have the impulse and inspiration for creating.
Saatchi Online Art Gallery contacted me in 2021 and invited me to be part of their first ever NFT project: The Other Avatars – a series of handmade, originally-designed avatars, created by international artists selected by curators. The launch was a success, and all works were sold in less than 24 hours. This experience opened the door (and my mind) to the world of digital creation.
In my previous creations with oil on canvas and paper, I’ve been obsessed with the possibility of the existence of multiple dimensions - possibilities that the mind allows as well as the theories of physics and more recently, technology. Exploring, leveraging, and transforming those dimensions becomes fascinating. For a curious mind, a physical world as the one we have created sometimes becomes limiting. Also experiencing a creative process where mistakes can be corrected immediately has become a new way of knowledge. Speaking of dimensions, moving from very large oil formats to a screen has itself been a challenge and at the same time a wonderful experimentation of how moldable our mind is.
In the last year I have been collaborating with galleries working with NFT- specific projects. At the moment I am preparing to release my first NFT portfolio.
